The web requires hyper-skepticism so as not to get roped into paying for something that sounds too good to be true. Some "gurus" do put out helpful information, but you can find just about any info related to creating/promoting a website that you would like for free somewhere on the web. (2) Nothing beats good content and good links. I'd put extra emphasis on content, though. Write for your readers and not for the search engines is how I look at it.
